Hawaii plans another cigarette tax hike (KPUA.net)

04/12/2010

HONOLULU (AP) — Smokers would pay 1 cent more per cigarette starting in July under an agreement reached by Hawaii lawmakers.

The tax hike on cigarettes and little cigars, which would raise an estimated $10 million a year, was approved by House and Senate negotiators meeting in conference committee Monday.

The 1 cent increase comes on top of a separate 1 cent per cigarette rise that had previously been scheduled.

In all, the tax on cigarettes will go up 2 cents per cigarette in July, to a total of 15 cents each. Then in July 2011, the total would increase to 16 cents.

The little cigar tax was previously set to rise by 3 cents in July, so now it would go up by 4 cents per little cigar, to 15 cents, and then to 16 cents in July 2011.
